Access & read iPhone SMS backup

30 Jun, 2011 16:53

Here is a guide to access & read iPhone SMS backup.

First, in order to have the most updated SMS backup, you must first sync the iPhone. Just plug your iPhone to your computer, open iTunes, navigate to your device page, click Sync.

Then, you have to locate where the backup is.
For Windows, it is at:
%APPDATA%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
where %APPDATA% means different in different Windows operating system version:
Windows XP:
%APPDATA% = C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Application Data\
Windows Vista:
%APPDATA% = C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Roaming
Windows 7:
C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Hint: to navigate to the folder, you can just copy the bold link to Start > Run…
For Mac, it is at:
~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
where ~ represents your home directory

You will see a folder there. Open the folder and look for a file:
]czo1MzpcIjNkMGQ3ZTVmYjJjZTI4ODgxMzMwNmU0ZDQ2MzYzOTVlMDQ3YTNkMjgubWRkYXRhDQpvcg0KXCI7e1smKiZdfQ==[

]czo0OTpcIjNkMGQ3ZTVmYjJjZTI4ODgxMzMwNmU0ZDQ2MzYzOTVlMDQ3YTNkMjgubWRiYWNrdXBcIjt7WyYqJl19[
Copy to your desktop and open with SQLite editor. There is a good cross-platform SQLite editor in Firefox Extension, which can be found here . The best thing to use a SQLite editor is that you can query through the file and filter what you want to search for.

p.s. the backup can also be opened in standard text editor, such as Notepad++ or TextWrangler.
